Cybersecuring Democracy: The U.S. Experience
Executive Director of USC’s Election Cybersecurity Initiative
University of Southern California
Abstract: The 2016 cyberattacks on the Clinton campaign and the Democratic party awakened officials across government and politics to the digital vulnerabilities of U.S. elections, governance and more. The previous year, USC had organized a multi- disciplinary cybersecurity initiative, and we have worked since 2016 with federal and state agencies and with political campaigns to help all secure their operations in cyberspace. This presentation will discuss how, in 2020, 2022 and 2024, USC’s team adjusted to respond to increasing dangers and risks posed by adversaries, foreign and domestic, whose goal is to discredit democracy in the U.S. and in other democratic countries.
